Who gets to keep the engagement ring?

My fiancee and I bought a house together three years ago. About a year ago we opened a home equity line in his name with which he used to do a balance transfer of the credit card he used to pay for the ring. We have broken up and he claims the ring is a conditional gift.

However, he has pretty much maxed out the home equity line on his own 'toys.' Since the ring is now charged against the house, which my name is on too, do I have any legal right to the ring? I claim that since the ring was given conditionally, I'll give it back conditionally – when he resolves his debt against the house. Is this correct? Do I have to give the ring back free and clear? Should I then give back all gifts that were not given on a holiday or occasion? Should I expect anything from him?

I would greatly appreciate any links to actual legal sites that states this information.
